Every business needs words to sell it. Whether you’re selling a product or a service, B2C or B2B, the words you use can be a sales prop or a sales flop. No matter how great your product or service is, if your words don’t resonate with your customers, it won’t sell.

Here are my 6 top tips to write words that do sell:

  1. Get straight to the point.  The headline is the most important part of your copy. People see hundreds of pieces of copy every day, and headings help them decide whether they’ll read the rest of the copy or not. So, make sure the heading is interesting and tells people what the rest of the copy is about.
  2. Focus on the benefits.  Put yourself in your customers’ shoes. For every feature your product or service has, answer the question – so what? Turn the feature into a benefit – what problem does that feature fix? How will it make their lives better?
  3. Be honest.  Don’t be tempted to exaggerate your product or service by using words like ‘brilliant’, ‘amazing’ or ‘best ever’. Unless you can justify these claims with facts, your customers will see right through them and you’ll lose their trust.
  4. Be clear.  Your customers need to understand what you are selling and why it benefits them. Keep your copy fluent by writing as you would speak. Imagine how you would sell the product or service face to face.
  5. Keep it short. Or as short as possible. Of course, the length of the sales copy will depend on what you’re selling and which media you’re selling it through. But don’t use more words than is necessary. A lot of waffle will put readers off immediately.
  6. Be persuasive. Sales copy must persuade the reader to act. So, be clear what you want them to do next. It could be to visit your website, to inquire about your services or to sign up to your emails. Whatever it is, tell them what it is and how to do it.

Writing copy that sells can be tricky and takes time. Your best chances of getting it right are to hire a copywriter.
